The Promise of a Pencil Chapters 1-5
Adam Braun is this man who does not really enjoy college. He questions the way the world works and often wonders about the life of places around him. Before he finds out about the opportunity to study abroad, he lived a normal life. He played on his college's basketball team and was well known around the school. He was athletic. In high school, Adam Braun played for his high school basketball team. They made it to the summer tournament where the team was joined by two new African American players... Cornelio and Sam. These two boys soon became Adam's brothers because his parents agreed to become their legal guardians. This makes Adam accepting towards everyone. He gets this opportunity to study abroad. This opportunity was something Adam has wanted to do for a while now, so he takes the chance. When the class set sail on the MV Explorer, they encountered a storm. This storm was devastating and made Adam think he was going to die. The ship was torn, people screamed, windows smashed, tables flipped and broken chairs filled the ship. Adam was a brave man in this time of struggle. He did not allow this crisis stop him from seeing the world around him. As the storm passed and the class stopped at Honolulu in order to do repairs on the MV Explorer. As they advance in their trip, Adam tells himself he will ask a question to a child in every country he travels to. "If you could have anything in the world, what would you want the most?" was the question Adam had asked. The answers he got were answers he never thought he would receive. One girl said she would love to dance. Another talked about having her mother feel better so she could walk to school by her side. A boy said he would love a pencil. This got Adam the most. Adam found out donating was not the only solution, giving was another. Instead of giving money to charities, he could personally give kids pencils... the main tool for one to be educated. This makes Adam one who would never back down from helping those who are in need.
